Back to School Tips
Switching back to study mode after Thanksgiving and Christmas break can be challenging for young children. And it is understandable! They have not had much experience switching back to “routine mode” like older children and adults have. So, how can you help your little one head back to school at Casa de Corazón and ease their discomfort from the transition? We have some great tips for after the holidays!
Create a Daily Routine and Stick to It
Waking up late, not doing homework, or forgetting to get your clothes ready for school can cause a lot of anxiety. To stay focused and charged all day long, you should create a routine and stick to it daily.
The daily routine you’ll develop depends on your daily commitments, your grade in school, and available extracurricular activities at your school.
Your daily routine should:
- Establish a time for waking up, getting dressed, and eating breakfast
- Include your daily class activities and attendance schedule
- Have time for the extracurricular activities you participate in – you can only take on one action a day and stick to it
- Avoid overloading yourself
- Create a time for homework, tests, and projects in the evening, and
- Have a specified time for bed to ensure you get plenty of sleep every night.
Creating a daily routine and sticking to it will help you immensely.
Develop Organizational Skills
Most parents will agree that no kid is born with organizational skills. Developing these skills requires practice and learning. If kids learn to organize their time and resources effectively, they can be more successful, not only in school but also later on in life. You can help develop their organizational skills through time management training, helping them manage their homework and keep track of tasks they need to do and their performance.
Create a Comfortable, Distraction-Free Study Space
Studying is so much easier when you are comfortable. Studying on a bed or couch can easily make you sleepy or tired. While studying, ensure you sit in a comfortable chair with sufficient back and neck support to avoid injury to the back.
Furthermore, you should ensure your study space is free from clutter or background noises. They can easily make you lose focus. Therefore, find a clean, quiet space in your home for studying or homework.
Keep distractions out of your mind and sight by wearing headphones to drown out noises. Also, you may keep pets in another room and put away your gaming console or any other distraction.
Stay Engaged by Participating and Asking Questions
It can be challenging to stay engaged if you’re seated in class the whole day. Active note-taking will help you stay focused and engaged during class. Also, participating by asking and answering the teacher’s questions will help you stay active in class and help you retain information.
Find Healthy Ways of Managing Stress
Getting adjusted to the school routine after the holidays can be pretty stressful. When you feel stressed and exhausted, don’t hesitate to take a step back, take a deep breath and evaluate the root cause of the stressful feelings. Doing so will help you create ways to deal with it. However, sometimes stress can be so overwhelming that you can’t handle it alone. Don’t be afraid to seek help.
Take Breaks
Studying is not a walk in the park for most students, especially after the holidays. The reason is that studying may seem boring and monotonous after a while. How about incorporating what you like to do into your studies?
You can take breaks to do what you love doing after specific study-time blocks, e.g., after every hour of studying. Take a walk, listen to music, or enjoy a snack. It will prevent brain drain and help you avert procrastination.
